Book 1: Rat

~Chapter One~
January 1, 2008
Dear Rat,
Today is my 12th birthday! My parents made me a chocolate cake covered with pink chocolate icing. It looks delicious! And tasted delouses too! All my friends came to my party, all 10 of them. We spent all day talking about boys and those other girls at my school. Later, after we ate my cake, I opened my presents. I got this beautiful dress! It was a pale purple with light pink roses at the bottom. Can’t wait to ware that to school tomorrow, the boys will stare at my all day! And I couldn’t forget, while I was opening the rest of my presents, Suzu, the cutest boy at my school, came over to MY house to give ME a present!!! When I answered the door I almost fainted! The present he gave me was a golden heart shaped necklace, and the heart had a keyhole in the center of it. And then he pulled out of his pocket a small golden key. It fit exactly in my necklace, and he said, “So I can lock your heart up so nobody else can steal it from me.” And then he kissed me!!!!! (On the cheek, but still.) I couldn’t say a word! He liked me! No, wait he LOVED me!!
Anyway, I got many presents, and the girls kept talking, unbelieving that Suzu kissed me. Oh, there’s one more present I wanted to talk about before I go. The last present I saw was a small wooden box with the Chinese symbol for the Rat. I opened it and there sat a wooden figure of a rat about the size of an American quarter. I know it might sound ugly, but it was beautiful. It was painted all black and had bright pinks, blues, greens, and white designs on it. It was connected to a gold chain.
Well, I think that’s enough excitement for today. I’ll talk to you later, bye!
Yours truly,
Saki
She set down her pen and looked over her letter. Once she was satisfied, she folded it up into a crane and put it in an envelope. She licked the envelope shut and wrote the Chinese symbol, Rat, and put it on her window ledge. Then, her younger sister, Kari, walked into her room and asked, “Why do you put your letter on the window? Won’t it fly away?”
Saki turned around to face her sister and smiled, “That’s exactly what I want it to do.”
Kari tilted her head showing she was confused.
Saki giggled and added, “Today is the first day of the Year of the Rat, my Zodiac sign. And so this year I can write to the Rat God. I put my letter on my window ledge because the Rat God will use the wind to blow my letter to Him,”
“Her!” Kari reminded.
“Yes, yes. Her.” She giggled as she ran up to Kari, grabbed her and lifted her into the air.
Kari laughed as she struggled to get away. They both fell onto the bed and sighed.
“When can I write the Rat God?” Kari asked, sitting up.
“You can’t. My Zodiac sign is the Rat, but yours is the Sheep.”
“Oh. So, when can I write to the Sheep God then?”
Saki laughed and sat up. “You have to be able to write first. But when you do learn, you can write to Her on your birthday, August first of the Year of the Sheep.”
“And when is that?” Kari asked, looking disappointed.
Saki mumbled while she counted on her fingers, and then answered, “In 2015, which is in seven years. You’ll be twelve years of age.”
Kari looked away in disappointment, and looked at Saki’s desk, where in the middle lie her wooden rat necklace. “And will I get a wooden sheep necklace, like yours?”
Saki looked at her necklace lying on her desk. She thought for a few seconds before answering her, “I don’t know. Mom said that nobody came to drop it off or anything. It just showed up after Suzu kissed me.”
“Ooooo, creepy!” Kari laughed.
Saki ignored her and continued, “So, I don’t know if the same person will give you one or,”
“Or God!” Kari interrupted.
Saki turned to look at her sister, then back at the necklace. “What do you mean, Kari?”
“Well, you don’t know where it came from or who gave it to you. And I was thinking, maybe the Rat God gave it to you.”
Saki looked at her sister with a confused then mad face. She stood up off her bed and walked over to her open door. “It’s late, you have school tomorrow.”
Kari got the message. She jumped off the bed and walked out of Saki’s room. Saki slammed her door and jumped onto her bed. Lying on her belly, she looked at the necklace, What if she’s right? Maybe the Rat God gave me the necklace and I am meant to do something………No! She turned her head and put her pillow on top of it.
What am I talking about!?! The Rat God didn’t give me this necklace! Just some relative. O no! My letter!
She rolled off her bed, her pillow now on the floor next to her. She jumped up and ran to her window. Her letter was still sitting on the ledge. She unlocked her window and opened it. A cool breeze blew in her face. She smiled and went back to her bed. She picked up her pillow, got herself under the blankets, and reached for her table lamp. She looked at the rat necklace one last time before turning off her light and going to sleep.
~Chapter Two~
January 12, 2008
Dear Rat,
My younger sister, Kari, has been bothering nonstop about you giving me the wooden rat necklace I wrote about in my first letter; and I was wondering if you did give me that necklace? I would really like to know soon, so Kari can stop bothering me! Also, if you did send it to me, I hope you’re not offended because I’ve kept the necklace in the wooden box it came in. If it does, I’m really sorry, right now I’m just a little freaked out by it, so I hope you can forgive me.
Anyway, off that subject for now. I was right about my dress; all the boys stared at me. Some of them even blushed! And the best of all Suzu came up to me and completed me! And in front of the whole school!!! Well, maybe not the whole school, but most of the people I knew.
Tonight I don’t have much to say, but I wanted to get the whole necklace thing out. I hope to hear from you soon!!! Bye!
Yours truly,
Saki
She folded it into a crane, like before, but this time she didn’t put it into an envelop. For her last letter she sent to the Rat God, was gone but the envelop was torn open and left on her window ledge. At first she thought that Kari had opened it and taken it, but she searched her entire house and found nothing of her letter.
She placed her letter crane on her window ledge and left for dinner.
“Did chew white another lether chew the Rath God?” Kari asked Saki as she sat down at the table, her mouth full of rice.
“What!?!” Saki confused of what she tried to say.
“Kari! No talking with food in your mouth! You know that.” There mother snapped.
Kari swallowed her mouth full and mumbled, “Yes mother.” She turned to Saki and repeated, “I said, did you write another letter to the Rat God?”
Saki cursed in Chinese, but kindly answered her, “Yes, I did. I asked Her if She sent me the necklace. And I talked about some other stuff.”
Kari stuck another spoon full of rice in her mouth. “Do chew think She’ll wepley?”
“One, stop talking with food in your mouth and two, I really hope so.”
“Me chew!”
After her comment, the rest of the evening was quite. They all finished their food, brushed their teeth, changed into sleeping wear, and went to their own rooms for bed.
“Good night!” Saki called before closing her door shut.
She yawned and went over to open her window. After she did that, she sat on the edge of her bed. She lied flat her back on her bed, and turned off her lamp. The only light in the room was the glow from the moon, shining outside.
Throughout the night, Saki turned on her lamp to see if her letter was gone or not. Each time she looked her letter was still there, untouched, unmoved.
I need to get some sleep!
She curled herself tightly in her blankets and tried to get to sleep.
Flutter, flutter, flutter. Saki woke to what sounded like the flapping of bird wings. She sat up in her bed, “A bird must have gotten in.”
She turned on her lamp, stood up and looked around her room. No bird to be found. Then, she looked at her window. There was her letter crane. Not lying on her ledge but flying! She stepped backwards, tripped and fell to the ground. She couldn’t believe her eyes. Her letter, a piece of paper, was flying! The paper crane looked at her, turned around and flew out her window.
“That didn’t just happen.” She stood up, still surprised by what happened. Slowly, she walked up to her window and looked out it for the paper crane. But there was sign of it anywhere. She stepped back and sat down on her bed. “I’m glad Kari isn’t in here, she’d be jumping up and down saying ‘I told you so’ over and over.” She laughed. “Now I really need to get some sleep. Though I don’t know how I could sleep after seeing that.” But she lied down and finely drifted to sleep.
